In Memoriam: Mickey Moore – Hardwood Flooring Journal


With disappointment, we share that Mickey Moore handed away on January 27, 2024.

In response to his obituary, Charles Michael “Mickey” Moore graduated from The Webb College in Bell Buckle, Tennessee, and attended Duke College for 2 years, finishing his diploma in Forestry on the College of Memphis in 1974. In 1981, he married Gloria Elrod Ash and have become a famend trainer and inspector for the Nationwide Oak Flooring Producers Affiliation (NOFMA). He traveled the world educating grasp lessons for technicians within the discipline. Moore was a previous president of The Lumberman’s Membership and was named “Lumberman of the 12 months” by the affiliation members in 2018.

A real legend of the wooden flooring business, Moore grew to become the technical director of NOFMA in 1988. He participated on quite a few NOFMA and Nationwide Wooden Flooring Affiliation (NWFA) committees and contributed to technical publications for each organizations. His experience was shared with numerous college students throughout NOFMA and NWFA colleges over time, which has an ongoing affect on wooden flooring professionals on the jobsite and in mills at this time.

Rusty Swindoll, who labored with Moore at NOFMA, says Moore was a pure trainer. “After I went in and requested him a query, Mickey would take a look at me and say, ‘Let’s go take into consideration that,’ and he’d ask me a query. I’d look it up and are available again to him and speak about it. He needed me to look deep into something I had a query about. He knew a lot about wooden, set up, sand and end, and acclimation,” says Swindoll.

Moore was extensively recognized for setting the NOFMA requirements for sizes, inspections, grades of flooring, and extra. Nevertheless, his obituary famous that his love for nature expressed itself in a number of methods, together with that he was an avid hunter and fisherman.

“Away from work, I found he appreciated to fish like I did. I went fishing with him a number of occasions. Within the boat, there was no speak about wooden – nearly our households and what we’re going to use to catch the fish,” shares Swindoll. “He was an all-around enjoyable man to be with. He knew a lot that I by no means may get all the stuff out of his head that I might have appreciated to have had in my head.”

He was prepared to show me every part he knew about grading and inspecting wooden flooring,” says John Forbes, director of producer providers for NWFA. “On behalf of NWFA and NOFMA, we ship our deepest sympathies to his household and pals. The business is and can proceed to be higher due to Mickey.”

Moore is survived by two sons, Charles Michael Moore, Jr. and Jon Lucas Moore, and two stepchildren, Teri Ash (James) Daniels and Brian Todd Ash, in addition to three grandchildren.

Visitation will probably be held at Canale Funeral House in Memphis on Friday, February 2, between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. A personal memorial service will probably be held at a later date. Memorials could also be made to The Nature Conservancy, Shelby Farms, The Michael J. Fox Basis, or a charity of the donor’s selection.
